Last time, we
created the gathers in your veil. Here, in step 5, we will finish by
wrapping an inexpensive comb with material and sewing it onto the veil.
You will need:
Strip of scrap tulle 4"-6" wide and around 18" long
Sturdy thread and craft needle
Inexpensive plastic comb
How to wrap the comb.
This is not the only way to attach your comb, but for me it is the
most comfortable. By securing thread onto tulle you get a harder hold
than if you use felt and glue. I also like the way the tulle looks on
the front edge of the comb, which may be visible at some points,
depending on how you wear your hair and if you have a separate
headpiece.
Twist the tulle into a condensed strip that will fit between the
teeth of the comb.
Begin by giving it a short "tail," which will be secured as you
wrap the teeth.
Wrap the long end of the tulle between the first and second
teeth and pull tight.
Continue by wrapping around the comb's base, then through the
second and third teeth.
Repeat this process until you reach the last tooth.
After the comb is wrapped, glue or tack down the tulle at the end of
your comb.
Sewing the comb to the veil.
You are going to attach the comb to your veil at the point the
blusher turns into the veil section. This is the same place you created
the gathers.
Before you begin, become familiar with the
orientation of your veil. Find where the trim ends at each edge, if
applicable, which is also where you created the gathers. If you have
edging and/or other embellishments, notice which side is the underside
of your veil. Turn the veil so your blusher is toward you, upside down.
This also means you are looking at the backside of any trim or beading.
Position the comb so when the veil is on, the comb will curve
toward your head with teeth pointing back, and the comb itself is
between the blusher and the veil.
Thread about 18" of thread through the needle and knot it.
Beginning on one of the edges where the trim meets the veil,
pull the needle through both the veil and tulle on the comb's end.
After the initial stitch, sew all the way across, catching your
thread along the gathers you make in
Step
4, Gathering the Veil.
When you get to the end, tie off and knot the thread.
Clip any stray threads, rub out any visible pencil marks, smooth
any uneven edges, and otherwise detail the veil so it looks
polished.
Congratulations, your veil is complete!
Final Tip:
You may notice you have wrinkles in your veil. To remove them, hang in a
steamy bathroom for awhile. If wrinkles remain, use an iron or hand
steamer to gently steam out the wrinkled areas.
Other Options
Making your veil from scratch is not the only option for
saving money on a veil. You can also buy from a wholesaler
who also sells individual items, on eBay, or buy a plain
veil and dress it up. Here are resources to help:
